OUR TESTIMONIALS – Leaving Legacies

“I could go on and on about why imPACT groups and the 708 building are beneficial to our students in Massillon City School District”

“We have daily requests from students wanting to be added to a group. These groups provide students with another person in the building who cares about them. Academics are temporarily set aside and it purely becomes relationship building. Students say they look forward to coming to school because of these groups. When students come to me as a counselor and don’t feel they fit in or have a friend, my first thought always goes to lunch groups.

The added addition of REMIX on the weekends has also been so amazing because we have students who are not yet connected to anything outside of school so they never get to do anything. They don’t go anywhere and oftentimes parents aren’t even home because they are working so students are lonely. REMIX gives students the opportunity to get out and have fun while being in the presence of positive adults.”

We are beyond excited to have imPACT groups back this year. We truly missed them last year. Our students look forward to their groups each week. I can’t tell you the number of times kids come up to me to ask if they can join because their friends tell them how awesome it is. We have a list for students to be added all the time.

The mentors offer a personal connection to the students. They know they have someone else besides their teacher or staff member to talk to. Mentors often become a student’s “go to” person!

Outside of school, REMIX offers our students a place they can have a sense of belonging and feel accepted. We are SO grateful for imPACT groups and REMIX!

“My daughter began attending REMIX when schools closed due to Covid. As an only child, REMIX quickly became the only place she could interact with other kids her age, in person, something she desperately needed during that time. The staff did a great job keeping our kids safe both physically and mentally. When school resumed in person, she was worried that REMIX would end.

Because of REMIX she has positive friends, a mentor she trusts, and opportunities to try new things she would never get to do if it weren’t for Legacy and REMIX. Her self-esteem is the highest it’s ever been and her grades are the best we’ve ever seen. REMIX truly changed her life.

“Getting to walk through challenges with my students is an honor.”

“Haning the opportunity to mentor an imPACT group this year has been rewarding. My small group of students has had to navigate a variety of very difficult things. I am always blown away that they trust me enough to not only tell me about them, but they actually want my advice. I wish I could have had a program like imPACT during my formative years. It truly makes a difference in students lives.”

“The Legacy Project is an invaluable program here at Lake Elementary, as it affords us the opportunity to reach our students through a solid curriculum, and to connect them with quality mentors from our community. The relationships that are built through the Legacy Project help us to further provide a supportive and caring environment that is integral for the personal growth of our students.”

Adam Booth, Assistant Principal at Lake Elementary

“As a School Counselor, I have a good understanding of the individual growth several students have made. Two of the biggest areas I have seen each year include improved self-esteem and sense of purpose. It has been extremely impactful on students knowing that a community member is checking on them weekly. This truly makes a student feel like they matter.”

Robert Laskey, School Counselor at Perry Local Schools

“As a School Counselor with over 22 years of experience, I have collaborated with numerous outside agencies and programs over the years. Legacy’s mentoring program is by far one of the most exceptional and effective programs that I have had the pleasure of collaborating with.
Legacy mentors have an honest and compassionate approach with students, combined with the rare ability to “walk in someone else’s shoes,” to better comprehend where a person is coming from.”

“The Legacy Project of Stark was developed in alignment with national best practices and we are constantly working to refine and enhance our policies, procedures, and programming.

Working with Mentor Central Ohio (MCO), the Ohio affiliate of MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, we have taken an even closer look at our recruiting, screening, training, matching, monitoring, and closure procedures, benchmarking our work against the best practices listed in the Elements of Effective Practice in Mentoring…This is just one example of how The Legacy Project of Stark is continuously improving and taking advantage of all resources available to serve the young people of Stark County.”

“Being a mentor through The Legacy Project is one way that I can give back to my local community. Boys need good male role models, and with many being raised in single-parent households today, the need is great. It is fun and satisfying watching them learn, mature, and continue developing into young men over the course of a year. In many ways, they teach me as much as I teach them. This experience will also come in handy as my 2-year old grandson grows up!”
